I do love a good photo diary, don’t you? Let me introduce you to one of the most fairy-tale-esque towns in Romania.
Before I left for Romania, I spent a lot of time in my pre-trip planning phase: reading relative blog posts, figuring out what I wanted to see, learning a little bit about the history and culture so I wasn’t completely ignorant, etc.
You see, before my friend moved to Romania, I didn’t really consider it a destination that I would be heading to someday and therefore didn’t know too much about it.
During one of my pre-trip planning sessions, I stumbled upon an episode of Rick Steves’ Europe and became intrigued. Rick traveled to Romania and visited Bran Castle and Brasov, both places I’d heard about and was planning on visiting with my friend, Nikki.
Then, Rick had my full attention as he pulled up to a smaller town called Sighisoara (sig-ee-SHWAH-ra)…and my jaw dropped. It looked like a fairytale land come to life. A old city center that wouldn’t be out of place at Disneyland. And I needed to see it.
Almost as soon as we arrived, I fell in love with Sighisoara. We arrived in the evening and immediately headed into the old town center, which happens to be a UNESCO heritage site and stunningly beautiful. As we sat and had dinner, I found myself just staring around at the buildings, drinking in all of the colors, history, and personality that was within my grasp.
After we finished dinner, we decided to walk around the old city fortifications while there was still manageable light. Plotted strategically along the old city wall stand towers, historically managed by one of the many local guilds: masons, blacksmith, cobbler, etc. Fortunately many of these are still in tact and were some of my favorite buildings, impressive against the darkening sky. And as we walked along the city center, the lights started to twinkle at us and transport us to a magical land…
The next morning, we got up with the sunrise and headed back into the old town square for some more adventuring! We loved to imagine what it would have been like to live in Sighisoara back in the day…when merchants filled the cobble-stoned street, musicians made their rounds, and this was still considered the frontier.
And then we spent the rest of the morning wandering around, learning about Vlad the Impaler’s hometown, climbing to the top of the clock tower, ascending the covered staircase to the school at the top of the hill, and take a ton of pictures!
So if you ever find yourself in Romania and want to feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale land, head on over to Sighisoara and prepare to feel enchanted!
Have you ever been to Sighisoara before? What do you think about it, after checking out this photo diary of Sighisoara?
