Staycation Ideas for Adults

We all need a chance for relaxation and a release from the daily grind every now and then. But sometimes student loans, limited paid time off, and health issues prevent us from taking that celebrity-esque style of vacation. These staycation ideas for adults can help you chill out in style, however you want to.

Just because you’re not jet-setting off to a remote island in French Polynesia or getting ready to jump out of an airplane in New Zealand, doesn’t mean that you can’t have an enjoyable reprieve from your day-to-day routine. Taking a staycation is a great way to rejuvenate your body, stimulate your mind, and return to the daily grind refreshed…without the hefty price tag.

A staycation can be completely personalized. If you want to stay home, soak in a tub and watch Netflix all day, go for it. But a successful staycation can be so much more than that.

Here are 8 staycation ideas for adults!

#1: Book a Massage

Whether you book an in-home massage or visit a spa, nothing is better than literally having your stress melt away from your body. If you’re on a budget, check out a local massage therapy school in your area. Not only will you pay less for your massage, but give a student more practice. On a staycation with your partner? See if your local spa or massage therapy school offers couples massages.

#2: Plan a Spa Day

Rather than trying to get a mani-pedi on a Saturday morning and a facial once a year, why not dedicate a whole day to getting pampered? Check out your local spa to see what specials they have going on. Focus on relaxation and getting centered. Even a 4-hour spa retreat can do wonders for the body and mind. And you don’t necessarily have to book endless appointments: some spas have soaking pools and lounge areas, only requiring an entrance fee.

#3: Go on a Gallery Stroll

Expand your mind and check out some local art galleries and museums. Create a map for yourself, don your most prestigious outfit, and get ready to be cultured. Stop and look at art pieces that you might not understand and try to figure out what makes them special. Unique. Worthy of being on display. Speak with the artists and curators if available. Learn their stories. And some towns might even have their own gallery strolls set up on Meetup.com, giving you the opportunity to meet other like-minded individuals.

#4: Eat at the Best Restaurant in Town

You know that fancy steakhouse where the cuts of meat cost more than your weekly grocery allowance? The sushi restaurant where the menu is in Japanese? Or that hip, new and trendy spot where the chef is the “next big thing?” Save up, make yourself a reservation, and splurge. Live the high life for a meal and see how many new things you can taste. Expand your tastebuds while expanding your waistband. Bring your significant other. Your girlfriends. Or the guys. Go solo. Get dressed up and have fun.

#5: Check out a Special Class

Zumba. Goat Yoga. Pole Dancing. Cooking. Surfing. Painting. Skiing. Kickboxing. Parkour. One of the reasons we go on vacation is to have different experiences and learn something new. Why not do it at home as well? Learn how to cook a gourmet meal at a local cooking school. Paint nights are all the rage and everywhere, and displaying a beautiful painting in your home is a lot better than lugging around a tacky keychain. Goat yoga is a great way to relax and laugh at the same time. Try something new that you wouldn’t normally consider in your routine. You just might find your next favorite activity.

#6: Take a Day Trip

Just because you’re staying local, doesn’t mean you can’t get out and explore. If you live close to a beach, mountain resort, desert oasis…get out and check them out! Instead of driving, consider taking the train or local bus. I love taking day trips because they get me out of my hometown without having to pay for overnight accommodation (unless I want to pamper myself). I can easily take day trips to 3 different states from my current hometown of Salt Lake City.

#7: Volunteer

Feed the homeless. Clear trails full of litter. Visit the elderly and listen to their stories. Tutor refugees in English. Many people incorporate service opportunities on their vacations, so why not serve where you live? I personally use JustServe.org to find volunteer opportunities, but there are tons of websites and apps that you can use.

#8: Play Tourist in Your Hometown

Look up your hometown’s claim to fame. Visit the tourist hot-spots. Take all the selfies. Check Google for the “Top Things to Do in (your hometown).” Take a walking tour. Rent a scooter or bike and look at the downtown buildings and architecture. Think about what you recommend to visitors when they come to your hometown and try them yourself!
