I like to lovingly consider myself a Disney freak. Growing up in Southern California, many of my earliest childhood memories were from trips to Disneyland with my family: pulling the sword from the stone and being “crowned Queen” for a day by Merlin, character dining in the hotels, catching beads tossed from parade floats, that epic first ride on Indiana Jones…it’s all a part of me now. Moving to Utah in 2009 not only put me physically far away from my Disney upbringing, but diminished my constant exposure to the Disney universe.
That is, until I discovered something wonderful: just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah, another wonderful Disney freak built an exact replica of the house from “Up,” complete with a white picket fence and mailbox!
History of the Disney Up House
In 2011, local builders from Bangerter Homes completed construction on their unique entry to the local Utah Parade of Homes with prior approval from Disney and Pixar. The small town of Herriman, Utah, was little more than open fields, deserted back roads to the Bingham Copper Mine, and a few scattered homes surrounded by possible construction sites. Trust me: driving out to the location back in 2011 was like driving into the unknown!
Soon after completion, the Hamblin family from California moved in, fulfilling their Disney/Pixar dreams…and proving that I’m not the only Disney freak in the world! The house sold for about $400,000USD, which is pretty reasonable compared to California prices, but didn’t seem to be any kind of an issue for the family. Can you really put a price tag on your dream house?
Visiting the Up House
Address: 13218 S Herriman Rose Blvd, Herriman, UT 84096-5729
The best way to find the Up House is by using your GPS. The address above will provide you with the best directions, which is why I haven’t listed any. Although this is a pretty fun location to take pictures, there are no facilities at the Up House. There is a small park nearby if you need to get out and stretch your legs, or if you’re traveling with little ones and they need to expel some energy. Here are a few tips to maximize your (short) visit:
- Please remember that although the Up House is straight out of the movie, people actually live in it. DO NOT approach the front door. This is private property and the owners have a right to their privacy. There are a few businesses a few blocks away if you require a potty-break. Don’t ask the owners if you can make a pit stop. Put yourself in their shoes…
- The house is surrounded by a community run by an HOA, so be respectful when visiting. Children usually play around the neighborhood, so observe the speed limits (25 mph unless otherwise posted). No need to drive erratically. Click here for Utah driving tips!
- Once you get the pictures you want, kindly move along. No need to crowd the sidewalk in front of the house.
Taking Pictures at the Up House
Please note that quick photos like the one above (outside of the fence) are completely appropriate and acceptable to take. Per the homeowners, if you’re going to be using the photos for marketing or have balloons, you will need to contact the homeowner directly.
