I’m not sure how it started, but for the longest time I was on a kick to discover and share the best street art that I could find in my current hometown, Salt Lake City. I drove around for countless hours, networked with local artists, and employed the help of a few close friends to uncover pieces of art that deserved to be brought out into the light. I even managed to write a few posts about them as well, seen here, here, and here. When I was preparing for a solo trip to Boston, I knew that I wanted to check out some of the local street art, but didn’t possess the same amount of time and resources as I did at home. After a little research, I discovered the Underground at Ink Block.
What is the Underground at Ink Block?
The Underground at Ink Block is a fairly new cultural attraction that spans 8 acres of a highway underpass, connecting Boston’s South End and South Boston neighborhoods (yes, those are 2 completely separate and distinct neighborhoods…don’t even get me started on it). Think of it as an open space where community events, fitness classes, and public gatherings are held, surrounded by world-class street art. In 2017, the Underground Mural Project was powered by Reebok and brought street artists from all over the world, transforming over 150,000 square feet of blank canvas into psychedelic art.
How to get to the Underground at Ink Block
Address: 90 Traveler Street, Boston, MA 02118
If you’re traveling to the Underground at Ink Block via public transit or the “T” (MBTA), exit at Broadway station and cross over the bridge towards the Ink Block apartments.
Who are the artists for the Underground Mural Project?
When the project began back in 2017, there were numerous artists commissioned from all over the world to make their mark at the Underground at Ink Block. Here are a few of my favorites that currently have their installations on display:
I loved spending about an hour at the Underground at Ink Block, just wandering around and enjoying the art. The entire space is an Instagrammer’s paradise, with popping colors, abstract designs, and optimal lighting. I can’t wait to see how quickly this area develops and how many more murals are planned!
