I’m usually not one to suggest visiting any kind of library while traveling. Quite the opposite, in fact. That perspective all changed when I sought shelter in the Boston Public Library.
Prior to my trip, I performed the usual Google and Pinterest searches for things to do in Boston, trying to get a rough idea of how I wanted to spend my precious weekend away. The Boston Public Library was usually on the “Top 10” lists, but I had no intention on spending time in a library when I have a perfectly good one in Salt Lake City. Silly me.
My first full day in Boston was a long one: not only had I come in on a red-eye flight, but I went straight to a whale-watching tour…and it was raining. I wound up seeking shelter from the rain in the Boston Public Library, and apparently stepped into a time portal.
Although the entrance on Boylston Street boasts a modern internet cafe and standard reading rooms, there is just so much more to this building. And once you ascend to the upper levels…that’s where things get interesting, ornate, and full of history.
As I climbed staircase after staircase, I marveled at how well-preserved the Renaissance-style architecture and murals were. Had I known before, I would have planned my trip to coincide with one of the daily tours that the Boston Public Library offers!
After wandering around aimlessly, gawking at everything with my mouth hanging open, I found myself outside the entrance to Bates Hall. Thinking it was just going to be another study room, I followed the bluish glow from the windows opposite me…and instantly felt my breath catch.
Now, I’ve never been to Hogwarts before (well, the castle in Orlando)…but I’d imagine this is what it would feel like. The room, illuminated by natural light from the large windows, accented with orbs of green desk lamps, just smelled of history, culture, and learning. If there was ever a place that made me want to have homework again, this would be it. I walked up and down the rows as quietly as I could, trying to not look like a moron as I tried taking pictures from every angle, hoping nobody looked up and photo-bombed me.
If you find yourself in Boston anytime in the near future, I urge you to wandering into the Boston Public Library for an hour or two. Trust me when I say that you won’t regret it! Have you ever been? What’s your favorite library?
