Spitz: Bringing Döner to Salt Lake City, Utah

Isn’t it awesome when you travel and you eat something that completely changes your life? You sit in wonder and ask yourself how you’ve been able to enjoy life before that moment when your tastebuds thank you for the new introduction. You’re not even finished with the first bite, but your mind is already planning out your next visit. Before you can even swallow, you hold your phone out for a selfie of your newfound comfort food go-to and snap away. Sound familiar to anyone? No? Just me? You’re lying to yourself. We’ve all had those moments while traveling. My moment of revelation: the döner.

My first döner ever…taken in Kiel, Germany at döner corner

I chose to post this completely unflattering, yet raw picture of myself, taken by my friend Leisl during my study abroad in Kiel, Germany. We’d heard about this little place in town, where there were 3 döner places on the corners, all within about a 50 foot circumference of each other. Wanting to try it out, our group headed down and I was introduced to the wonderment of the Turkish döner. I would eat at least one every week, when I traveled around Germany, and often waited in line for insane amounts of time. Why? Because I remembered my first bite.

After I returned to Salt Lake City, I never forgot about döner. I craved it. I needed it. But I couldn’t find it anywhere. Döner aren’t very difficult to make: they’re sandwiches stuffed with meat (traditionally lamb) that is shaved off of a vertical rotisserie, 3 different sauces, salad, and cheese; but recreating that wonderful first bite is almost impossible. Fortunately, my friends and I returned home with a desire to find a place that would satisfy those döner cravings, minus the cost of a flight to Europe.

Enter: Spitz.

With 2 locations in Salt Lake City, Spitz has become synonymous with good Mediterranean food, most particularly the döner. Whenever my friends and I are tired of cooking and want to go out for some good food, Spitz in Sugarhouse (located at 1201 Wilmington Ave #101, just behind the Bed Bath and Beyond) is almost always the first place we bring up. Fresh ingredients, delectable food, a fun and quirky atmosphere…what more could a hungry consumer want?

With a döner in hand, I could hang out all day

One of my favorite features about Spitz in Sugarhouse is that each table usually has a deck of cards, just begging to be played while you wait for your food…or when you need to take a breather from all of the yummy food you’ve been shoveling into your mouth. Phase 10, Cards Against Humanity, Uno, you name it. Next to the register is a little bookshelf that even has stacks of board games if you’d rather not handle cards.

Vegetarians and Celiacs can rejoice: Spitz has both options so you don’t feel left out. Check out their full menu here. By the time you finish your meals, sit back and relax for a while. The inviting atmosphere is part of the ride and I’d encourage you to take full advantage of the games you can find all around. We’ve played games with tables next to us, watched sporting games on the TV, or just flat-out people-watched for almost an hour. Believe me, you’re not going to be able to move very fast after hoovering down a döner, pommes, or fried garbanzo beans!

Berliner Fries (Pommes) are delicious and were a fun discovery last time I was at Spitz

If you’re not very adventurous when it comes to food, it’s time to break out of your comfort zone: Spitz is delicious and döner will change your world. Go to Spitz. They didn’t ask me to write this: I just love it so much and want to share it with the world!!

Have you ever been to Spitz before? Have you ever tried döner before? What did you think?
