The Year of the Road Trip

The Year of the Road Trip

Earlier this year I wrote a post about the 17 places I’d like to visit in 2017. It was a fun, light-hearted post that put out to the world some of the places I’ve been dreaming about. Even though I consider myself a traveler, I wasn’t really confident that most of the trips and destinations would come to fruition. I work full time and have various responsibilities within my community and family that keep me consistently in Salt Lake City. I’ve looked a lot at my list (and have already started to cross things off of it) and realized that a nice group of the destinations are easily reachable via car. As a result, I’ve decided to dub this year the Year of the Road Trip!

The Year of the Road Trip

2 birthdays ago, I purchased Victor, a black Honda Civic. I had gone a full year without a vehicle in Salt Lake City, but decided to buy myself a car for my birthday in 2015. Since then, Victor and I have had some good times together, including many a road trip to Southern California, off-roading in Arizona, and he has been a literal vehicle to earning a second income.

Before Victor, I was rarely (if ever) able to fall asleep in a vehicle. Much to my friend Emily’s chagrin, I’ve slept in the driver’s seat during almost every road trip I’ve taken to Southern California, taken naps in the Winco parking lot when I decide that 2am grocery shopping must be done while coherent, and have contemplated purchasing one of those airbeds that fit in the back seat.

Now, it’s time to take the next step. I’m taking a break from driving for Lyft and have some more time on my hands. Weekends that had once been dedicated to driving around downtown and Park City are now going to be dedicated to exploring the state of Utah and its neighbors. I recently joined a few groups on Facebook that have gotten me really excited about road trips in the West, which have given me a few ideas to mull around.
